How Universal Unit Converter works

All conversions run locally using exact conversion ratios. Digital storage defaults to the binary 1024 base (IEC standard) used by operating systems — switch to 1000 for SI/marketing specs.

  1. 1

    Pick a unit category

Choose from Length, Area, Weight, Temperature, Digital Storage, Speed, Time, Volume, Pressure, or Energy using the category tabs.

  2. 2

Enter a value and select units

Type any number in the From field and select the source unit. The result updates instantly. Use the ⇄ swap button to reverse the direction.

  3. 3

For digital units — choose your base

1024 (default) follows the IEC binary standard used by Windows, macOS, and Linux for file sizes. 1000 matches the SI decimal standard used by storage manufacturers and telecoms. The toggle is visible only in the Digital category.

  4. 4

    Use quick conversions

Tap any quick-pick shortcut below the converter to instantly load a common conversion pair — no typing required.

All unit conversion math runs entirely in JavaScript in your browser. No data is sent to any server.

Frequently asked questions — Universal Unit Converter

Why does my 1 TB hard drive show only 931 GB on my computer?

Hard drive manufacturers use 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (1000 base). Your operating system uses 1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (1024 base). Select "1000" in the Digital toggle, convert 1 TB to GB, then switch to "1024" and convert back — you will get exactly 931 GB.

What is the difference between 1024 and 1000 base for digital units?

The IEC standard defines 1 KiB = 1024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1024² bytes, etc. Operating systems report sizes in this binary base. The SI/decimal standard (used by storage manufacturers and ISPs) defines 1 KB = 1000 bytes. This tool defaults to 1024 to match what you see in your file manager.

How accurate are the conversions?

All ratios use the internationally defined exact values (e.g. 1 inch = 0.0254 m exactly, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg exactly). Temperature conversions use the exact ITS-90 formulae. Results are displayed to up to 10 significant figures.

Can I convert hectares to acres?

Yes — select Area, type your value, set From to Hectare and To to Acre. 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres. The quick-pick button for ha → ac is available below the converter.
